What first got you interested in Magic (or even, TCGs more generally)? Was there a moment, or did it happen more gradually?
I started playing Magic when I was in my early teens; I'm 38 now. One of my really good friends had a decent number of cards, and we would often throw together janky 60-card decks and play in his kitchen after school.
In the same vein, what first got you interested and active in content creation? What keeps you interested?
I got back into Magic after a very long time away from it, about 10 years or so. I was playing heads up commander with my best friend Erik in my basement and I suggested we use my streaming equipment to try streaming the games to my Twitch channel I was using to stream League of Legends. At the time, we had no knowledge of commander streams or Magic content, so ironically, we thought we were trailblazing this new streaming format. Come to find out after a couple of months, it is actually this huge thing people do. That always makes me laugh when I think about it.If I had to pick a single thing that keeps me interested in all of this, it's that I get to spend a lot of time with my friends doing something I'm really passionate about. That's all it will ever be about for me.
What's your all-time favorite Magic card, and does it hold a personal story or significance for you?
This is a tricky question. I really love a lot of different cards for different reasons. But if I had to pick one, it would be the 2011 Birds of Paradise Promo. BoP brings back a lot of memories from when I first became interested in the game, and the art on that card is genuinely spectacular.
If you had to choose one Magic format to play forever, which would it be and why?
I've really fallen in love with cEDH. I'm a big chess guy, and cEDH feels like chess with Magic cards. It's hands down my favorite way to play.
Who are some creators or players in the Magic community that inspire you or that you think deserve more recognition?
I've met a lot of people doing this, but if I had to pick, I can think of three.
First is Alan from Mental Misplay. He's always been kind to me from the start. I've met a lot of great people through him, and I look up to him a lot.
Second would be Carlo, CFavrettoJr. Carlo has always been supportive of me and just a good dude all around. Anyone who knows him would tell you that. I really admire his work ethic.Last but certainly not least is Tim, Goldsabertooth. He's an AMAZING artist. Apart from that, Tim is just a S-tier human. He's inspired me to get back into art myself, and I just really appreciate him. I probably tell him that too much, but I'll keep saying it.
What's your take on the current state of Magic: The Gathering—formats, new sets, or the community as a whole?
Magic is in a good spot, honestly. I'm having a lot of fun with it in its current state, so I probably wouldn't change anything. As with anything, you need to take the good with the bad; they balance themselves out. People need to remember that this is just a card game; try not to take it too seriously.
Have you ever had an epic Magic moment—like a top-deck win, an unexpected combo, or a perfect draft—that you'll never forget?
I've had the opportunity to play Magic against some people I never thought I would over the last year, so getting a win in on some of the raid bosses of EDH always feels good.
What's one Magic card or mechanic that you think is underrated or doesn't get the love it deserves?
Have you heard of the Clash mechanic? Look it up if you haven't. Then, go build a Marvo, Deep Operative deck. You're welcome.
How has being part of the Magic: The Gathering community enriched your life, and what do you value most about it?
For me, it's hearing how my community provides value to people's lives. That has been something unexpected that I've found walking this path. For instance, when someone takes the time to thank me for building this thing because it has changed their life for the better. That's a very visceral experience. I never intended for any of this to end up where it has, but those stories keep me moving forward. In my head, it's still just Erik and me playing Magic in the basement.
